This literature review compares the current solvents used, namely sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and N-methylpyrrolidine, to an alternative supercritical carbon dioxide-based solvent. Currently used solvents have proven to be costly in terms of disposal, water usage and treatment, and replacement. These solvents have also been shown to have adverse affects on humans after short term and chronic exposures. The information gathered during this study shows that supercritical carbon dioxide-based solvents can reduce these costs immensely and may be a necessity for staying competitive in the future.

Continuous Synthesis of Oleyl Oleate in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide using Solid p-Toluenesulfonic Acid as Catalyst

Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) was used as solvent to synthesize oleyl oleate as an analog of Jojoba oil from oleic acid and oleyl alcohol with high conversion (100%) of the acid into ester in a short time of 100 min. Utilizing a low cost solid catalyst, p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (PTSA), the esterification reaction was performed, without any prior preparation step...

Fabrication and Characterization of Polyetherimide Hollow Fiber Membrane Contactor for Carbon Dioxide Stripping from Monoethanolamine Solution

In this research, process asymmetric polyetherimide hollow fiber membranes using ethanol (0, 2 and 4 wt%) as non-solvent additive in the polymer dope via phase inversion method were fabricated. Aqueous solution of 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidine (NMP) (90%) was applied as a bore fluid to avoid inner skin layer formation and water was used as the external coagulant. The morphology of fabricated membranes...

Synthesis of amides and lactams in supercritical carbon dioxide.

Supercritical carbon dioxide can be employed as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional organic solvents for the synthesis of a variety of carboxylic amides. The addition of amines to ketenes generated in situ via the retro-ene reaction of alkynyl ethers provides amides in good yield, in many cases with ethylene or isobutylene as the only byproducts of the reaction. Reactions wi...
